Gordon graduated from the University of Exeter with an LLB in (Euro) (German), English, German and European Law, an LLM in European Legal Studies and a PhD in European Law. He is now working as Principal Counsel Competition for Siemens Energy in his home country of Germany. In this episode hear about Gordon’s experiences of studying and working in a different country, this includes how he came to complete a PhD, his varied career; including his experiences of working in private practice compared to in house, his transition from working in the UK to Germany and his general tips on studying and securing employment in the legal sector.

In this week’s episode Employability and Careers Consultant Sarah Blunt talks with Dan Hartley, Department for Education Adviser for the Get Into Teaching service, and Luke Graham, Lecturer in Education at the University of Exeter. In the first half of the episode, Dan shares what skills he thinks are needed to be a good teacher, entry routes into teaching and progression opportunities available after qualifying. In the second half, Luke talks about the PGCE offering at the University of Exeter and shares his advice on how applicants can choose the right course for them.

Becoming a barrister and sustaining a demanding career with a family.

Emma graduated from Exeter with a BA in Politics and subsequently went on to complete a graduate entry law degree and the Bar Vocational Course. She is now a Barrister with 5 Essex Court, working in public law, public inquiries and inquests, and a range of civil work. In this episode hear about Emma’s decision to pursue a career as a Barrister, how she secured the all-important pupillage, including tips and advice on joining an Inn of Court. We also discuss what it felt like to be newly qualified, the realities of being self-employed and Emma’s experience of taking time out to have a family and returning to sustain a demanding career alongside juggling family life.
